Fashion: Jean therapy

Although the thermometer still runs high, you’ll get a leg up on fall by shimmying into a new pair of jeans.

Drawing inspiration from the seventies and the eighties, the wide-legged trouser cut and the skinny jean continue to go back to back, with considerable showing of designer support for both styles.

European design houses such as Giorgio Armani and Gianni Versace continue to give the edge to skinny and super-skinny jeans while a strong North American contingent which includes Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren balance things out with a broad base of wide-legged styles.

“The skinny jean is still strong for fall and has too many ways to rock its style to leave us,” says Perry Sharma, spokesperson for Vancouver-based Quiksilver Canada. “Tuck skinny jeans into boots, and dress them up and down with sexy stilettos and flats. Wide-legged jeans also strut their stuff with some figure flattering improvements.

“The reality is that unless they were tall or super slim, many women found that the wide, straight-legged jeans that were making head lines last spring made them look wide and boxy, even when they were wearing them to their best advantage, with fitted tops and high heels.”

“This fall’s new adaptation of the wide-legged jean is cut to suit a wide range of figure types,” says Amber Yantha, spokesperson for the Bootlegger chain.

Streamlined updates on wide-legged trouser jeans, sometimes also dubbed the boyfriend cut, remain straight legged but are now slightly fitted through the hips and thighs.

Leg-lengthening benefits on some new wide-legged styles include a centre seam, side seams that are angled slightly forward and subtle, tone-on-tone pinstripes.

The ever-popular seventies-inspired boot cut jean remains a modern classic, in a range of widths that include wide, small and very slight boot cuts.

Tight-to-the knee jeans which flare into a bell hem started the summer on the cusp of celeb-inspired style and continue to move mainstream for fall.

No matter what your preference in jean width or silhouette, fall colours take a mostly dark and somber turn.

Pack away summer’s baby blue, white and brightly colored jeans in favour of fall’s dark indigo, black and grey.

Grey gets the everyday roll out, in shades of charcoal and blue-grey, while eighties glam and punk rock inspired black skinny jeans gad out and about.

Other eighties flashbacks include subtle variations on the acid washes that also prevailed back in the day.

Ankle zippers on skinny jeans form another possible blast from the past, while fob chains hanging from waistband loops offer a new element of style.

Folksy looking embroidery on the back pockets or waistbands of jeans is another possible form of decorative expression in a season largely dominated by clean and unembellished styling.

The slightly worn in look of subtle whiskering and fade-out ombre effects relieve the solid depth of some dark denims.

Long tunic tops remain the most popular accompaniment to skinny jeans, while fitted tops and layered looks remain popular with wide-legged and boot-cut bottoms.

A pair of cowboy boots and a loosely knotted hanging scarf are among the must have accessories that can propel you and your jeans through the remainder of August and into September in style.
