Fashion resolutions for 2008
THE thing with New Year resolutions is more often than not, you never keep them, give up after half-hearted attempts or totally forget what they are in the first place. The trick I believe, is making them fun and reasonable enough so that it won’t tax you so much.
So in the spirit of making resolutions, I’m going to make a list of style resolutions for the year. However, some of the things on this list may hurt the budget, but hey, like I always say, brands aren’t everything, so always choose what makes you feel your best.
1. Buy real jewellery
Yes, costume is fun, but this year, why not invest in a fabulous piece of jewellery that you can have for the rest of your life?
Plus it has the advantage of being passed down as a family heirloom.
2. Get a classic bag
Instead of several seasonal bags you’d get bored with within weeks or months, or whose sell-by date expires the moment the season is over, get one great bag for all seasons. Why not spend RM10,000 on a single bag than the same amount on several seasonal ones? The Guardian newspaper agrees! See More money than sense, opposite.
3. Consider an architectural shoe
Shoes this season look insane. Who knows if you can wear them and who cares anyway? Just get one pair because they may never look this strange again.
4. Choose a trench
There are several beautiful coats to choose from out there, like the swing, A-line, cropped or full-length, but a classic trench is something everyone should have. It doesn’t have to be Burberry, and it doesn’t have to be khaki either. Be Angelina Jolie and get one in black. A glamorous coat is always an asset.
5. Pick a great watch
Most of us have watches for day, night, sports, every occasion under the sun, including timezones and diving to impossible depths. Why not simplify and get a basic and beautiful watch that will take you from day to night? You might not be able to go diving or jump from a parachute with it, you won’t be able to tell the constellations or the equinox and maybe it will be smashed if it gets in contact with a sledgehammer, but realistically speaking, are any of those things part of your daily life? I would love to own Philippe Dufour’s Simplicity, but since that’s not quite possible, something along those lines would be great.
6. Invest in a seasonal piece
There are designers, and there are designers. Some designers can make a collection, and anything they touch is worth investing in. Think Alber Elbaz for Lanvin, Roland Mouret, Olivier Theyskens for Nina Ricci, anything by Marc Jacobs and, of course, all the one-off collections and collaborations. These pieces become part of fashion history, and sometimes it doesn’t even have to be clothes. For example, some of the best costume jewellery worth investing in comes from Chanel. Don’t you wish you bought some pieces from Tom Ford’s last collection for YSL Rive Gauche and Gucci?
7. Discover your true style
Technically, this shouldn’t cost you anything. Instead of following the crowd and the current trends, how about channelling your inner style goddess (if you haven’t already) and discovering what best suits you? This year should be all about you, so make the most of it, and wear whatever makes you look and feel good!
