For many, the new year comes with resolutions that include striving for a fitter, better, healthier body. Whether that means hiring a personal trainer, joining a gym, trying yoga or signing up for spin classes, most likely you will need some new gear. We ask several fitness professionals around town to recommend one fashionable item to start your quest to look your best and achieve those goals.

Yoga shirt

FITNESS PRO: Jennifer Findlay, partner and director of yoga, 889 Yonge — Yoga & Holistic Lifestyle Spa. 889yonge.com

WHAT GETS MY PULSE RACING: I always practice in cotton – it’s the most breathable! I love Edun organic cotton t-shirt. At 889, we believe in Edun — which is founded by Bono and his wife — it’s a socially conscious clothing company committed to sustainable employment in developing areas of the world. They are also committed to using organic materials and paying fair labour wages. As a yogi, I’m inspired by their vision, values and ethics and I love supporting such a progressive and mindful company.

Neck warmer

FITNESS PRO: Sean Orr, personal trainer. Seanorrworks.com

WHAT GETS MY PULSE RACING: In the gym when you’re training your muscles, you are opening your pores and skin. You don’t want to walk outside and cool down too fast. You want to stay warm as long as you can. Wrap a scarf around your neck and tuck it under your chin. One of my clients also mentioned that it is a very popular thing in L.A. now. Try any scarf made of wool, cashmere or organic fibres like bamboo.

The scarf, above, was bought at Holt Renfrew last fall.
Physiological shoe

FITNESS PRO: Mark Kehr, president and co-owner, The Yorkville Club. theyorkvilleclub.com

WHAT GETS MY PULSE RACING: I get really good feedback from our trainers and clients about this shoe. Because of the way it is designed, it helps to focus on your core, lower back, hamstrings and glutes. You’re forced to keep your balance and naturally your core muscles will kick in. It doesn’t replace a personal trainer or an hour at the gym but it is a respectable workout for your lower body and core.

Masai Barefoot Technology physiological shoe, mbt-info.com. $325, Ron White The Foot Shoppe.

Performance monitor

FITNESS PRO: Augy Marmelo, fitness consultant at the Four Seasons health club and co-owner of The Training Zone Inc.

WHAT GETS MY PULSE RACING: The Nike + system is basically a microchip you place in the running shoe which monitors the distance you move. It sends a wireless signal to your iPod Nano via a receiver. It’s a great motivational tool. Not only can you listen to music, it tells you how fast you’re going — you can select a male or female voice – it tells how many calories you’re burning, measures the distance and how many miles you’re going per minute. Download it on the Nike + website to keep a record and keep track of your goals. You can try it out for free at the Nike Runner’s Lounge at 1219 Yonge St. before deciding to buy.

Nike + sport kit, $39 and Nike Air Pegasus + 2007 running shoe, $129.95, nikeplus.com.

Water bottle

FITNESS PRO: Michelle Crisp, chiropractor, and personal trainer at Women’s Fitness Club of Canada, 1820 Bayview Ave.

WHAT GETS MY PULSE RACING: My stainless steel water bottle stands out. People will frequently ask me questions about it. I always have it with me, even when I’m not working out. I’m big on promoting hydrating. It helps burn fat. Also, research is now showing that plastic water bottles leach toxins in the water.

These eco-friendly stainless steel ones from Klean Kanteen also come in baby sizes that you can put a sippy lid on.

Klean Kanteen ultralight stainless steel water bottles, 12 oz to 40 oz, from $16 to $30, at Peaches & Green.

Watch

FITNESS PRO: Dwayne Walker, Elite trainer at Goodlife Fitness. Goodlifefitness.com

WHAT GETS MY PULSE RACING: This watch has many features. An alarm – great for getting you out of bed for the gym! It’s also a stopwatch. It measures your heart rate which is great when you’re starting out to know your heart rate to prevent injury. It also counts how many calories you burn. For some people seeing numbers helps them to know they are reaching their goals.

Mio watch, $60, miowatch.com.

Cycling shorts

FITNESS PRO: Micheline Wedderburn, spin instructor and co-owner of Quad in Toronto and Oakville. quadspin.com

WHAT GETS MY PULSE RACING: I discovered this brand when I was living in LA. I find that traditional cycling shorts are not flattering on women – it makes you look like a sausage. These don’t grab on you – it’s not aggressive – it’s better than those diaper padded ones which cause most women to complain of saddle-soreness. These are padded with a lasercut chamois lining inside. It eliminates bulk and chafing and you can wear it without underwear. It also wicks away moisture. It flatters all sizes and I can wear them all day.

Shebeest shindigger padded cycling short, $115, available at Quad.
